Our Technical Capabilities
We manage the entire lifecycle of a facility exit or hardware refresh.
High-Security Sanitisation
Data centre drives contain the highest density of sensitive information. We mitigate this risk through:
Live Infrastructure Visibility
Monitor your facility exit and sanitisation status in real-time.
Managing the exit of a high-density environment involves thousands of moving parts. The Surplex Portal provides a central command centre for your project, ensuring every blade, server, and rack is accounted for from the moment it leaves the rail.
When a data centre or server room is decommissioned
The work rarely starts with the hardware. It starts with a lease ending, a migration to colocation or to cloud, two sites becoming one, or a refresh that leaves a room full of equipment nobody has budgeted to remove.
Each of those arrives with a different deadline and a different constraint. A colocation or cloud migration has a live service to protect, so the old kit cannot come out until the new one is proven. A lease end has a date that does not move. A consolidation leaves equipment in a building somebody else is about to occupy.
Surplex UK Limited handles the IT decommissioning in all of them. Racks, cabinets, patch panels, structured cabling, PDUs, UPS units and the contents of the server room come out to a schedule agreed against the property or migration plan, and drives are destroyed on site where the data cannot be allowed to travel.
Precision Engineering meets the Circular Economy
Decommissioning a data centre is a high-stakes operation with zero margin for error. We provide a “Total-Security” framework that protects your hardware, your data, and your environmental reputation.
Server disposal and server recycling, from a single unit upwards
Server disposal, server recycling and server decommissioning describe the same work at different scales, and you do not need a data centre to need it. A single retired server from a comms room is collected on the same terms as a full hall, and there is no minimum quantity.
Old servers tend to hold the most sensitive data in the building and the most recoverable value in the estate, so both are handled under one chain of custody. Drives are removed and sanitised to NIST 800-88, or shredded to BS EN 15713:2023 where destruction is specified, and a certificate is issued for each one. Racks are de-mounted and removed by our own BS 7858 vetted staff, and the chassis, rails, switches and power units that cannot be recovered go to IT equipment recycling with evidence notes and nothing to landfill.
Most customers find their collection is free, because the value recovered from the hardware is set against the cost of the work, and where it does not cover that cost a small logistics and processing fee is quoted upfront. The work is surveyed first, so you get an asset list and a method statement before anything is disconnected, and collections happen within the week.
Comms rooms and server rooms during a site closure
A site closure is a smaller version of the same problem as a full facility exit. There is a rack, a patch panel, a UPS and a switch, and the building has to be empty by a date that is not yours to set.
Drives from comms rooms can be shredded on site before the rack leaves the building, so the data never travels. Everything else moves under GPS-tracked transport to the Gloucester processing centre.
Where an estate is closing several sites at once, documentation is issued per site rather than per programme, because property and finance close each building out separately. See how that worked across twenty closures.
Environmental & ESG Reporting

Corporate tenders now demand high-level environmental accountability. Surplex UK Limited provides the raw data your sustainability team needs for annual reporting:
Frequently asked questions
Decommissioning a data centre environment requires a level of rigorous risk mitigation that goes far beyond standard logistics. From technical de-racking and cable management to the safe removal of heavy-duty UPS systems, our engineers operate with a “Security-First” mindset to protect both your data and your physical facility.
We have addressed the critical questions regarding our RAMS (Risk Assessment & Method Statements), our on-site data destruction capabilities, and how we manage the complex compliance requirements of infrastructure recovery.
Surplex UK Limited produces a full audit trail for every collection, available at any time in the Surplex Portal.
- WEEE waste transfer notes, the legal proof of compliant disposal
- A certificate of destruction against each device serial number
- Asset inventory reports carrying make, model, serial number and specification
- Scope 3 carbon and landfill-diversion figures for your ESG reporting
Surplex UK Limited provides full risk assessments and method statements, written for your specific facility, before any work begins.
Engineers work to your site’s health and safety protocols throughout, so a live environment stays protected.
Yes. Surplex UK Limited handles full infrastructure recovery.
That includes the safe removal and compliant disposal of lead-acid and lithium batteries, server racks and power distribution units.
Yes. Where data-bearing media cannot leave the perimeter, Surplex UK Limited brings mobile shredding units to your loading bay and destroys the media before it is transported.
Your team can witness the destruction.
Surplex UK Limited carries liability insurance written for technical and data centre environments, covering engineers working in live server rooms and transition spaces.
Current certificates are available on request.
Not directly. The core expertise of Surplex UK Limited is IT infrastructure, which covers servers, storage, networking, UPS and cabling.
For facility elements such as HVAC or gas suppression, the team works alongside your existing facilities contractors so the site is reinstated safely and in the right order.
Most customers find their collection is free, and recent enterprise storage and compute often recovers more than the work costs. Surplex UK Limited works on an open-book value-offset model with no minimum quantity, so the value recovered from the hardware is set against the cost of decommissioning, data destruction, transport and recycling, and you are shown the arithmetic before anything is committed. Where the recovered value does not cover the work, a small logistics and processing fee is payable, quoted and agreed upfront.
Yes. The service is identical and only the spelling differs. British and European documentation uses data centre, while much of the industry’s vendor and technical literature uses the American data center, so buyers see both. Surplex UK Limited decommissions data centres across England, Wales and Scotland, whichever spelling appears in your tender documents.
Yes. A single server room, a comms room, a floor of racks or an entire facility are all handled the same way, and there is no minimum quantity. The work is surveyed first, so you get an asset list and a method statement before anything is disconnected. Smaller rooms are often completed in a single visit.
They are removed under the same chain of custody as the IT hardware and handled as hazardous waste where the chemistry requires it. Surplex UK Limited holds an Environment Agency carrier licence covering hazardous waste and transports to ADR requirements. Lithium and lead-acid cells are segregated at the point of removal, because the storage and transport duties differ from ordinary IT equipment.
Racks and cabinets, structured cabling, power distribution units, UPS and battery systems, network and storage hardware, and the make-good of the space once it is clear. Every data-bearing device is recorded against its serial number and destroyed to NIST 800-88 or BS EN 15713:2023, and non-data infrastructure is recycled with zero waste to landfill.
