Most customers find their collection is free on that arithmetic. Where the recovered value does not cover the work, a small logistics and processing fee is payable, quoted and agreed upfront.
Evidence for the social value question
Under section 1 of the Public Services (Social Value) Act 2012, a contracting authority must consider how what it procures might improve the economic, social and environmental well-being of its area, and how the procurement itself might secure that improvement. Every collection produces carbon and WEEE reporting you can put directly into that assessment, rather than a supplier statement you have to take on trust. The obligations that actually apply to a local authority
A council remains the data controller for resident records after the hardware leaves its buildings. The duty comes from UK GDPR and the authority’s own retention and disposal policy, so the disposal has to be evidenced rather than simply arranged. Alongside that sit the WEEE duty of care for the equipment itself and, for most authorities, a declared net zero or climate commitment that the disposal route has to support. Certified destruction to recognised standards
Hard drives and solid-state media are shredded mechanically, the Destroy method defined by NIST 800-88, and destruction is carried out to BS EN 15713:2023. Where value is recovered from hardware, data is erased with Certus certified software to the same standard’s Purge method. Both produce a certificate against each serial number.
